OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR/CNN) – A woman said she was leaving work when she saw a young child walking alone in freezing temperatures.
“I started to get out of my car, and I was like, ‘Are you OK? Are you OK?’ And he ran from me,” Mindi Blanchard said Friday.
She said she saw the 5-year-old boy without a jacket on him. The temperature around 5 p.m. Thursday was 21 degrees, with a wind chill of 5.
Blanchard says her motherly instincts just kicked in. She yelled at the child, “Where’s your mom?” and he stopped.
“Just frozen. I mean, the dried frozen snot crying tears all over him,” she said.
Before Blanchard could warm him up, she says an employee from the nearby daycare facility ran out.
“Jerked him from my arms abruptly and roughly and started screaming at him, ‘How did you get out? Why are you not listening?’ Blanchard said. “And I was just stunned standing there.”
Blanchard says she called police, but the daycare and the officer didn’t even question her or ask for her name.
Childcare Networks sent a statement confirming a 5-year-old walked away from the daycare.
They said the child was outside approximately one to three minutes, according to their investigation. They have fired the teacher who was responsible for supervising this group of children, and they are also cooperating with Department of Human Services in the investigation.
Blanchard says she just wants something done to prevent this from happening again.
“If no one knows, no one corrects it,” Blanchard said. “If they brush it under the rug, this could happen to another kid. That’d be horrible.”
