BLACKSBURG, VA (WSLS/CNN) – Virginia Tech police charged a student Monday with illegally possessing an assault rifle.

Yunsong Zhao is being held without bail.

In addition to the rifle, Zhao purchased the rifle and a former police car that still had some of its police markings.

Zhao attempted to buy 5,000 rounds of ammo, according to a police report.

He also was researching bulletproof vests, police said.

News of the arrest spread throughout campus.

“It’s not funny to anyone really and it gets people scared for no reason,” said Christian Wenger, a freshman at the school.

Last year marked the 10th anniversary of the Virginia Tech shooting massacre.

Seung-Hui Cho, 23, killed 32 people before taking his own life.

Freshman Lauryn Fraser says she felt safer with Zhao under arrest.

“Virginia Tech is a pretty nice place,” she said. “I don’t think it’s dangerous so the fact they arrested somebody, I feel pretty safe.”

The case is under investigation, a university representative said.
