NEW ORLEANS (AP) A federal decide is about to listen to arguments in a 2015 lawsuit by which New Orleans judges are accused of operating what quantities to a “debtor’s jail.”
State legal district courtroom judges in New Orleans are asking U.S. District Decide Sarah Vance to throw out the lawsuit, which was filed by plaintiffs who say they have been unconstitutionally jailed for owing courtroom money owed.
Among the many judges’ arguments for dismissal: They are saying they’ve taken steps to deal with the complaints, and that the courtroom money owed owed by the unique defendants have been resolved.
The plaintiffs, represented by civil rights attorneys, are urgent on for a declaration that the courtroom’s practices are unconstitutional.
Vance was to listen to arguments Wednesday in New Orleans.
