LANSING (AP) — A brand new group goals to get help for a constitutional modification that may change how Michigan attracts legislative and congressional district strains.
The nonpartisan Voters Not Politicians group needs to amend the structure to vary the redistricting course of and create an unbiased Residents’ Redistricting Fee that might redraw district strains.
Committee spokesperson Katie Fahey says the group plans to carry city halls throughout the state in Alpena, Detroit and Petoskey to get suggestions from residents on what they want to see in a poll referendum.
Fahey says the language would stress illustration of minority communities and having districts be compact and contiguous.
Republicans managed the redistricting course of after the 2010 census. They’ve a majority within the state Home and Senate, in addition to most state congressional seats.
