Motorcyclist caught after chase on San Lorenzo River levee

SANTA CRUZ >> A motorcyclist with no rear license plate failed to yield and led a police chase along the San Lorenzo River levee until he fell and was arrested Monday night, Santa Cruz police said Tuesday.

Steven Duran, 26, of Santa Cruz was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, evading a police officer and reckless driving, police spokeswoman Joyce Blaschke said. He also faces a probation violation and a felony warrant on suspicion of having a controlled substance in prison, according to Santa Cruz County Jail records.

A patrol officer tried to stop Duran on his motorcycle, which lacked a rear license plate, at Laurel and Front streets on Monday, Blaschke said. The motorcyclist rode up on the west levee near Riverside Avenue and sped back across all lanes of San Lorenzo Boulevard just east of Jessie Street, Blaschke said.

“When the motorcyclist attempted to drive up another path that leads to Ocean View Park, he lost his balance and fell and dropped the bike in the process,” Blaschke said.

Duran was wearing a helmet. He is known to police, Blaschke said. The motorcycle was stolen from Scotts Valley, she said.

Duran was at Santa Cruz County Jail on Tuesday night. His bail was set at $10,000.
