The Metropolis of Detroit is pleased with our standing as a Welcoming Metropolis, the place immigrants from all nations are embraced. When President Obama was attacked for his determination to extend acceptance of Syrian refugees, Detroit turned a nationwide chief in publicly providing a house for these households.

I’ve had an opportunity to go to a few of our refugees as they’ve moved into their new houses in Detroit.  Their tales are deeply shifting:  fleeing with younger youngsters from the horrors of struggle, barely subsisting in overcrowded refugee camps in Turkey or Jordan, typically for years, till the prolonged U.S. vetting course of lastly clears them.

Once you hear the satisfaction and pleasure of their voices for his or her probability to start out a brand new life on this nation, you understand what America means to so many on the planet.  Our nation gained’t be made safer by telling victims of oppression that America’s doorways are closed to them or by telling them they’re unwelcome due to their faith.

That’s simply not who we’re as People.
