MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) — Opening statements are anticipated this week within the federal trial of a sports activities agent and an affiliate accused of smuggling Cuban baseball gamers into the U.S.
Potential jurors shall be questioned starting Monday within the case of Bartolo Hernandez and Julio Estrada, each of whom have pleaded not responsible.
A grand jury indictment says Cuban baseball gamers paid the smuggling ring greater than $15 million to go away the Cuba in secretive ventures that included surreptitious boat voyages, pretend paperwork and typically threats of violence.
No gamers are accused of wrongdoing. Gamers Yoenis Cespedes of the New York Mets, Jose Abreu of the Chicago White Sox and Adeiny Hechevarria of the Miami Marlins might testify for the prosecution.
